Conics of Apollonius
October 14, 2008 – November 14, 2008
Trained in mathematics and economics, Michael Schultheis uses his background to express analytical problems in a stunningly visual and expressive way. He treats his painting surfaces as a chalkboard- creating layers of mathematical notations and drawings that describe the form and motion of three-dimensional geometric shapes.
Employing this layering process, Schultheis further explores the narrative that develops between form and content. He is interested in interpreting what happens in the human mind at the intimate and profound moment when analytical ideas are visualized. For the viewer, there is an obvious connection to the work of the Abstract Expressionists. Schultheis’s “analytical expressionism” embodies this view of art as a fusion of rational order and irrational impulses. Schultheis’s canvases are heavily worked, intensely energetic and gestural, yet there is great fluidity and control in his compositions.
