Peter Waite
Arrivals and Departures
16 April – 23 May 2008
Connecticut artist Peter Waite is particularly well known for his large-scale paintings of cultural edifices. Working in acrylic, Waite paints upon multiple plastic panels. Following his elegant use of color and emotion, his richly detailed vision unfolds.
His work represents a visual record of collective social memory, while also paying testament to the familiarity of good design. Regarding the use of architecture in his work, Waite says: “I intend to convey moments of perceiving, then remembering.” Having omitted figures from each scene, Waite invites the viewer’s direct participation: we seem to either be the first to arrive, or the last to depart.
