“There are seemingly conflicting realities, one of architectural locations for commerce or habitation and another of nature or landscape as things both encompassing
and impenetrable. As if they are responding to disparate parts of the brain to pattern categories of the environment. In this case, the nature must be sought after and
deliberately reached, while the architecture lies within a vernacular that echoes something familiar. Only here it is threatening the sense of its’ benign form.”
-Seton Smith Winston Wächter is pleased to announce an exhibition of new work by Seton Smith. In this latest series, Smith continues her examination of architectural forms and spaces, and our relationships to these structures. Previously, much of Smith's work depicted images of interiors, drawing us into a personal, private world and challenging our sense of space, function and memory. This latest body of work, all shot in 2007, is comprised entirely of exterior images. The hard-lined shots of entrances and exits present a sort of minimalism that is rarely present inside the home. Additionally, each image is printed at six feet by six feet, inviting the viewer to approach them in terms of real architectural scale. Smith's images emerge as possibilities or propositions from a particular vocabulary of architectural style, each emotionally or psychologically charged. Very often the exact location and nature of the structure is not discernible from the limited information provided in each image. In this way, the photographs mirror human memory, providing both familiarity and mystery at once. For further information, please contact Amanda Snyder at 212-255-2718.
