Through the bold and sophisticated use of color and complex abstract compositions, these paintings capture a moment of flux in layers of paint and resin. Understanding Parish and Ayub's process is key to appreciating the work. Guided by the Zen Buddhist concept of Wabi-Sabi, which seeks beauty in imperfection, they embrace the quirks and anomalies that arise from the layering process, rather than condemning them as imperfections. There is both a literal depth created by multiple layers of resin and paint, and the more ephemeral illusion of even greater depth created through the handling of materials. In her last show, Parish used the circle as an archetypal symbol of completeness and perfection. It reasserts itself here, but with a new function. The circle helps form the reoccurring grid in this work, and like a drumbeat, it brings order and stability to the compositions. The analogy to drumbeats is an apt one, as this work is heavily influenced by music. There is a play between competing layers of circles and colors--an interaction that can be likened to the layering of rhythms, textures and voices in music. For further information, please contact Amanda Snyder at 212-327-2526.
