![]() Winston Wächter is pleased to announce an exhibition of new work by Betsy Eby. In this latest series, Eby further explores the possibilities of rhythm and pattern in abstraction. Her encaustic paintings emphasize the sensuous nature of her materials. Wax and oil paint are blended, layered and built-up to create paintings with an intensely sculptural presence. While never specifically representational, Eby's work clearly suggests elements of nature. Twisted branches and floating leaves seem to intertwine as they create flowing and multi-layered compositions. The movement implied by Eby's sweeping lines and calligraphic gestures call to mind the energy of Jackson Pollock, Kenneth Callahan and Mark Tobey. At the same time her subdued palette and inky line suggest the influence of Asian landscape- an unsurprising connection given that the artist studied in Japan. Additionally, Eby's own interests as a naturalist, materialist and musician heavily inform her aesthetic vision, creating gestural paintings that, as she describes them, "mimic chaos through rhythms of a golden mean."
