Isa D'Arleans
New Work

9 January – 22 February 2008

Seattle-based artist Isa D'Arleans draws much of her influence from the School of Paris. Born in France, Isa studied beneath renowned painter Patrick Breyse before emigrating to the United States in 1985. Following her success as a painter, D’Alreans has more recently begun exploring her vision in a mixed-media format.

Her latest body of art incorporates clichés, cultural icons, and masterpieces. Her overall tone, while enigmatic, is light and often humorous. Eclectic snapshots create surreal environments, and her subjects appear either entranced or in crisis: D’Arleans leaves it up to the viewer to decide which.

Christopher Reilly
New Work

9 January – 22 February 2008

Artist Christopher Reilly is particularly well known for his depictions of nature. His medium is a delicate mixture of gypsum, watercolor, tree-sap resin wax, and gesso, which he layers upon the canvas. Following Reilly’s intensive scraping, reheating, and additive and reductive techniques, a uniquely rich surface unfolds.

Reilly’s pieces are deeply and elegantly expressive, and they illustrate his reverence for beauty. His subject matter calls upon an organic realm, as flowers, branches, insects, butterflies and leaves embellish his serene color fields. His art explores the dichotomy of the physical and spiritual worlds.

Says Reilly of his work, “It is the inherent life force in all things and the transcendent mystery that creates, preserves, and dissolves.”  It is the power and unpredictability of the wild that inspires Reilly: “We can diagram it, plot it, and cut it up, but we can never fully understand nature.”
