Michael Schultheis
Winston Wächter Fine Art is pleased to announce the opening of "Toroids of Ganymede," our first solo exhibition with Northwest artist Michael Schultheis.

Trained in mathematics and economics, Schultheis uses this mathematical background to express analytical problems in a stunning and visually expressive way. He treats his painting surfaces as a chalkboard – as problems are worked through, some ideas are kept and built upon, while others are rejected and erased.

The resulting painting is something of an archaeological artifact, a record of the thorough process of an analytical mind. Citing DaVinci’s notebooks, Schultheis’s canvases are a place where scientific ideas are explored analytically and expressed visually. For the viewer, there is an obvious connection to the work of the Abstract Expressionists. Schultheis’s "analytical expressionism" embodies this view of art as a fusion of rational order and irrational impulses. Schultheis’s canvases are heavily worked, intensely energetic and gestural, yet there is a fluidity and control in his compositions.

Schultheis has exhibited both regionally and nationally with numerous solo shows, and is included in public and private collections. He has exhibited at The National Academies, The National Academy of Sciences, and the Fairbanks Gallery, Oregon State University.
